Mossberg blasts GMail
September 21st, 2005I’m sure Gmail will get better and better, and will eventually adopt the new programming techniques that allow desktop-like ease of use. But I’m not sure Google’s arrogance will ever make room for user preferences on things like folders or ads, or how emails are grouped. Yahoo’s new email program would blow Gmail away if it were widely released today. That’s partly due to its features, but also to its respect for user choice.

As a Gmail user, I will admit I was a bit put-off when I immediately discovered that I didn’t even have the option of creating folders. It was kind of annoying actually, especially when you don’t remember which email in a serious of 20 or 30 (with no common major keyword) you’re looking for.
Google is arrogant, no doubt, but long-term I think they’ll embrace choice. They’re too smart not too. Maybe Gmail 2.0?
